An American individual, along with a Belarusian journalist and activist, have both received clemency as part of a United States-Russia exchange involving prisoners.

A U.S. resident is one of the trio granted freedom from a Belarusian prison, as per the announcement made by the administration of President Donald Trump.

The release comes amid a high-profile prisoner swap between Russia and the US.

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced to reporters that one American and two individuals from Belarus were being freed. However, the name of the American was kept confidential, as Adam Boehler, US special envoy for hostages, stated that this person preferred to remain unidentified.

A US-supported broadcasting organization, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, recognized their journalist Andrey Kuznechyk as one who had been released from detention. This release occurred in November 2021 following accusations that he was involved with an “extremist association.

Activist Alena Maushuk, who is a mother of three, was one of three people released, according to pro-Western opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya via social media. Maushuk was apprehended for participating in protests and subsequently convicted of “mass disorder” following the 2020 Belarusian presidential election. This came after opposition groups accused the government of widespread electoral fraud. However, the Belarusian authorities have rejected these allegations, insisting that the turmoil was incited by the United States, its European allies, and neighboring Ukraine.
