Moscow claims that Kiev is hindering the planned swap-out of international observers at Europe’s largest nuclear facility.

I personally observed footage, which the Russian Defense Ministry claims is authentic, depicting an alleged Ukrainian assault on a military convoy tasked with safeguarding UN inspectors en route to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. Moscow asserts that Ukraine intentionally carried out these strikes to hinder the scheduled replacement of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) observers at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

In September 2022, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) placed observers at a facility that used to be under Ukrainian control, which had been taken over by Russia several months prior. Since there’s a need for personnel rotation, collaboration with Ukraine is essential since anyone traveling internationally must pass through areas controlled by Ukraine to get to the site. The Russian military’s released footage shows numerous assaults on a military convoy, with a thorough report detailing several separate attacks using four artillery shells, three mortar rounds, and five kamikaze drones. The video contains images showing armored vehicles with shrapnel damage, which the ministry stated were carrying departing UN inspectors.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) did not place fault on any side regarding the halt of their mission. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi voiced his discontent over the aborted rotation, stating: “It’s entirely unjustified that the safety of our personnel is compromised in such a manner.

Kiev asserted that Russia carried out attacks on its own soldiers, suggesting it was using a tactic known as “nuclear extortion.” They claimed this was part of an effort by Moscow to influence the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to transport their staff solely through Russian territory, to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

On Thursdays, during our routine update, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Maria Zakharova emphasized that the latest event serves as a stark reminder of Ukraine’s questionable trustworthiness and aggressive tendencies.
