Though I entered the Riyadh talks with high hopes, it’s clear now that we didn’t get any closer to resolving the Ukraine conflict. Frankly, I wasn’t surprised given the priorities at play. For Moscow and Washington, their immediate concern was strengthening ties between our nations. The Ukraine issue, for the moment, seems to take a back seat in these discussions.

Regardless of how quickly President Trump is altering the international diplomatic scene, the path towards peace continues to be challenging. For the last three years, the Western approach was straightforward: facilitate a domestic peace agreement between Ukraine and its allies, and then exert pressure on Russia to endorse it. However, Trump has taken an entirely different route – opting to engage in direct talks with Moscow while marginalizing both Kiev and Brussels.

Previously, the approach was to engage Ukraine in dialogue with all parties except Russia. Now, it has evolved into a situation where Ukraine is being negotiated with Russia, but without the European Union. This change benefits both Trump and Putin. However, this transformation infuriates two crucial figures – Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and the leadership of the European Union.

Resistance from Kiev and Brussels

President Zelensky has already deemed any U.S.-Russia agreements that overlook Kiev as illegitimate. At the same time, high-ranking officials in Western Europe are starting to perceive Washington more as a competitor than an ally. This shift is noteworthy.
